A Flower Filled Home

How To Add & Care For Beautiful Flowers In Your Home

Adding flowers to any home instantly gives it a fresher feel. No matter how dated your décor is or how much you deplore it, a vase or two of fresh flowers in every room will instantly bring the place back to life and make it feel like a home. But how do you go about adding fresh flowers to your home?

Buying fresh flowers

One aspect of adding fresh flowers to your home that puts many off it is the cost. They can appear to be a waste of money if you do not have a lot of disposable income due to the constant need for replacement and high maintenance needs of flowers. However, they are not as expensive as they appear and finding flowers can in fact be quite a cheap way to add décor to your home.

Where to buy

Supermarkets are your best friend when shopping for flowers. Check out budget supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl for cheap bunches of carnations and roses that tend to retail around £1.89 that last surprisingly well for the price. More mid-budget supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s also offer bunches of flowers that are a little more expensive but still not too expensive. Higher-end supermarkets such as M&S and Waitrose have flowers that are priced around £8 plus mark which is quite expensive, especially if you are not looking to spend a lot. However, do not discount these supermarkets purely on cost as you will often find bargains in the sale bucket. Just because the flowers are ‘out of date’ does not mean they will instantly die when you get them home as with a little bit of care and fresh water they will come alive and survive very well.

Tip: make sure you take the ‘flower food’ out of the packaging. If you buy a couple of bunches to put in a vase together, don’t use both packets at once and save one for a later date when the flowers look like they need a little bit of help.

Tip: a great substitute for plant food is aspirin!

If you are short on time for shopping around for flowers and can’t afford to be hunting around the bargain bins of your local Waitrose every week, a flower subscription service is a great place to start. Bloom & Wild and Freddie’s Flowers both offer fresh flowers through the letterbox with the option to buy a one-off box or enter a subscription service where you a fresh bunch of flowers is delivered to your doorstep every month.

Tip: if shopping for flowers and house plants full stop is not something you have time for, there are house plant subscriptions services as well too! Popular ones to try are Sprout London and Geo-Fleur Plant Post Club.

How to care for them

Flowers just need a little bit love! Make use of the ‘flower food’ included in purchase, change the water regularly to avoid the flowers becoming mouldy or rotten and be mindful of where you place them in your home (not near a heat source).
