Must Try: Paddle Boarding

Why You Should Try Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding is often associated with a lazy holiday in the Med or off Australian’s coasts, not with the choppy waters of the UK. However, paddle boarding is taking the seaside climate by a storm at the moment – allowing people to relax and explore the water in a whole new way. It is versatile too and can easily be performed on any body of water from reservoirs to rivers. Here are six reasons why you should try something new this summer, explore the water in a whole new way and give paddle boarding a whirl.

It is easier than surfing

Surfing has long be admired as the best activity to do on the open water but paddle boarding is its easier, younger sister. Stand-up paddle boarding is as self-explanatory as it sounds – stand up on the board and paddle away.

It isn’t that difficult

The most difficult part of paddle boarding is learning how to initially stand up and then you are away. Many places offer introductory sessions with a qualified instructor so it isn’t a time-lengthy process of learning how to paddle board. The best places to learn are tranquil seaside harbours such as St Mawes, Cornwall where the water is calm and safe.

A more calming alternative to most watersports

It is less-concerned with splashing and soaking and more concerned with enjoying your surroundings. Gliding across the water is very relaxing and allows you to explore the coves and beaches of the area from a unique vantage point. You will be almost at one with nature, riding the waves on the open ocean or slipping seamlessly down the river in complete silence.

It is fast-growing

The paddle boarding community in the UK is fast-growing so it is the perfect time to get involved. There is a dedicated and enthusiastic community continuously looking for new members and those to get involved. Join your local paddle boarding club and make new friends over your shared love of the water.

It is cheap fun

Due to the lack of guidance, supervision and equipment involved in paddle boarding, it is a lot cheaper than most seaside activities. For those on a budget it still allows you to get your fix of the sea air and have fun on the water on either the weekend or on holiday. A good board will last you a long time and I have gotten so much use out of my Fanatic Damond Touring.

It keeps you fit

Paddle boarding is of course, exercise! It is a great core and arm workout that won’t feel like one at all. It is relaxing whilst working your body hard but not in a painful or strenuous way. You’ll come off your board feeling refreshed and invigorated.
